Postpartum hair loss: cause, duration, and recovery
Na de zwangerschap kan de haarcyclus opnieuw verschuiven. Daardoor valt een groter aantal haren vaak enkele maanden na de bevalling tegelijk uit.
In brief
Tijdens de zwangerschap blijven relatief meer haren in de groeifase.
De zichtbare uitval begint vaak twee tot vier maanden na de bevalling.
Het patroon is meestal diffuus en tijdelijk.
Nieuwe groei kost tijd; aanhoudende of afwijkende uitval verdient beoordeling.
CHANGING HAIR CYCLE
Why does hair loss occur after giving birth?
During pregnancy, hormonal changes keep a relatively larger proportion of hairs in the growth phase. After childbirth, more hairs shift into the resting and shedding phases.
This common pattern is called postpartum telogen effluvium.
A few months later
When does the hair loss usually begin?
The increase often becomes visible two to four months after giving birth. This time difference is part of the natural duration of the hair cycle.
Sleep deprivation, recovery, nutrition, and emotional strain can provide additional context during the same period.
Usually, hair loss occurs diffusely across the scalp. The part or hairline may temporarily appear thinner because many hairs shed at roughly the same time.
Sharply defined bald patches, pain, or noticeable skin changes suggest a different condition and should be assessed.
TIME FOR NEW GROWTH
How long do outages and recovery take?
For many women, noticeable hair loss gradually decreases as the hair cycle returns to balance. Visible regrowth takes longer because new hair first needs to grow out.
Follow the overall trend each month, not the number of hairs per day.
ADDITIONAL REVIEW
When is it advisable to look further?
Discuss it with a doctor in cases of severe fatigue, other physical symptoms, persistent significant hair loss, or when the density does not gradually recover.
Iron status, thyroid function, and other factors may also be relevant depending on the individual situation.
De trigger en de zichtbare uitval vallen niet samen. De haarcyclus reageert vertraagd, waardoor een verandering van maanden geleden pas later in de borstel of douche opvalt.

Telogen effluvium
Learn how a larger number of hairs can enter the resting phase at the same time and why hair loss often becomes visible later.
Hair loss often becomes more noticeable two to four months after giving birth because the hair cycle responds with a delay.
How long can postpartum hair loss last?
The noticeable hair loss often decreases within a few months. Full visible recovery may take longer because new hair grows slowly.
Can breastfeeding cause hair loss?
The hormonal transition after pregnancy is the most important context. Breastfeeding occurs during the same period, but does not by itself explain the pattern.
Will my hair go back to how it was before pregnancy?
For many women, density gradually recovers. The pace varies, and existing pattern thinning may become more noticeable at this stage of life.
When are bald patches atypical?
Clearly demarcated bald patches are not characteristic of the usual diffuse postpartum pattern and warrant assessment.
What support is appropriate during this period?
The Hair Check helps organize the pattern. TRIX Basic Beta provides targeted nutritional support for maintaining normal hair condition in a diffuse profile.
